WC

Thanks for advice.
I don’t have any usb,s connected

Is the Playback meter bouncing green bars?

Is the blue waveform showing as you play?

What Playback device do you have in the Device Toolbar: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/device_toolbar.html

The green playback meter and the blue waveform are both showing.
I have tried various combinations of the devices available which are, MME,Windows direct sound,Wasapi, speakers realtek
and primary sound driver.
The setting I was using when it was working, (about two weeks ago), was MME and Speakers Realtek.

Can you play a CD or DVD on your PC - does it play with sound?

Yes, CD does play as do other files from other music programs such as
Sibelius Music Notation files.

Have you got the Audacity Playback slider turned up: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/mixer_toolbar.html

Yes

Please select “Help > Audio Device Info”, wait for the info window to appear, then copy and paste the entire contents into your reply.

Try setting (in the device toolbar)

Host: MME
Recording device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input
Playback device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output

Tried Microsoft sound mapper as suggested. Still no playback.

In that case, it must be the computer sound system settings (because that’s what the “sound mapper” settings use).
Open the Windows Sound Control Panel and look to see what the default playback device is (on the “playback” tab).

The only playback device is Realtek High Definition Speakers. The volume id set to 100%.

Make sure Audacity is still set to
Host: MME
Recording device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input
Playback device: Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output

Post the Help > Audio Device Info… again with Audacity set as above.

Are those speakers where you are trying to listen?

Right-click in that window in empty space and choose “Show disabled devices” then right-click again and choose “Show Disconnected Devices”.

Now right-click over the Speakers (if that is what you want to use). If you see “Enable”, choose it. Right-click over Speakers again. If you see “Set as Default Device”, choose it.

Does Windows Media Player work?

If it does, check to see what playback device it is using:
In Windows Media Player 11 and 12 on Windows 7, “Tools > Options > Devices > Speakers > Properties”.

Windows media player is working and Realtek speakers is the only available device.
I should also say that when the problem first occured I downloaded another free recording and playback
software program which works perfectly.

Please post the “Audio Device Info” from Audacity with your current settings.
