Playback is silent when guitar isn't plugged into USB port.

Basically, I’m trying to record music into Audacity 2.03 using a straight-to-guitar USB cable. I am running Windows 7.
My problem is that when I try to play the recording back and the USB cable isn’t plugged in, the playback is completely silent.
I’ve tried exporting the file and playing it in iTunes, VLC and Windows Media Player as a WAV, but it’s still silent.
The only time I can get any noise out of the recording is when the guitar-to-USB cable is plugged into my laptop.

I have noticed that changing the output volume on Audacity has no effect on the actual output volume.
I’ve tried changing my output option, but it is set on Speakers and Headphones and still not working.

Does anyone have any idea to fix this? Playback from this recording using the USB cable is only working when the USB is plugged in.

Any help would be much appreciated

It sounds like you have two different problems??? The USB interface is some messing-up your system, and you can’t export to WAV???

What guitar interface cable are you using?

I assume you can play other files without the USB interface plugged-in? You exported in WAV format?

Will your exported file play back in iTunes, etc., when the USB interface is plugged in?

When you re-open the WAV file in Audacity, do you see the waveform? Can you hear anything, after re-opening the file with the USB plugged in or not?
