Playback is balking, skipping, pausing, and generally not working

I am using the most current release (3.6.2) on a Mini Mac with the M1 chip running Sonoma 14.6.1. Since the latest Audacity release I can barely play back what I record. This happens with recordings of varying lengths. My recordings are single mono tracks of spoken word. I am not applying any plugins – especially because there seems to be a bug (yes it’s a BUG not a feature) whereby the audio file you export from a project that has master effects is empty…the correct length, but empty.) I have tried increasing the buffer size. That does not work. Restarting Audacity and or my computer also does not work. For me this is a deal breaker. I’m going to have to use another platform.
thanks–

You can roll Audacity back to the last version that worked for you. The earlier versions are available here.

When you get the replacement installed, Tools > Reset Configuration. If that’s still a little ratty or unstable, there are methods of really cleaning out the 3.6.2 software update.

Windows?

Another platform or another application? If these fixes don’t work for you, post back what you decided to do.

You are awfully kind to get back to me so quickly. Thank you.
By another platform I mean going forward another DAW that is not Audacity. Audacity has many advantages, but the stuttering playback makes my work difficult (audiobook producer / narrator). I’m struggling to finish a book that has many challenges and will continue with a slow stuttering Audacity until the book is complete. I don’t have the time to do a roll back at the moment. But in a few days (I hope) when I complete this project I will try that.
Or Ableton. I promise: no Adobe though. Thanks again for your help.

Do the finished chapters play OK?

Are you working with non-internal drives? That can cause some serious problems. Audacity only likes working from the one internal drive.

There have been forum posters who insisted on producing their whole book as one Audacity Project. Bad idea.

You actually have two problems. Whatever is causing your stuttering and speed problems, and the need to get the show out the door faster than you can apply possible fixes.

A “roll back” will take 10 minutes max.

I’m a Windows guy but it’s usually “something else” interrupting the audio.

Your operating system is ALWAYS multitasking and interrupting. If something “hogs” the system for a few milliseconds too long you get buffer overflow (recording) or buffer underflow (playback) and a glitch.

Whatever is interrupting doesn’t have to be using a lot of CPU cycles, it just has to hog the system for a few milliseconds too long.

The finished chapters play without any issue after being imported to mp3. (As long as no master effects are applied) (I don’t need or use them anyway)
Every Chapter gets its own project, yes! Sometimes pieces of chapters get their own.
I do work from internal drives and export to external drive, with a back up to the cloud; I’ve gotten super cautious in my old age lol.
Thanks again for your help. I’m sure it will all get sorted.

@MickReader, I had this same issue and it was because the settings of my speakers had switched to 16kHz. For some reason, this happens every time I run Izotope RX, so when I do that, I have to go in Audio MIDI Setup and switch back to 48 to use Audacity.
