I used this button before and it works great but now it doesn’t I hope someone can help.
You’re pressing the “P” key?
Does it work if you click on the pause icon?
What else is running on your machine that could be taking up the P key? Audacity doesn’t play well with others.
You can reassign pause to another key. It’s a preference.
Audacity > Edit > Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard

yes I have used both and none have worked. As a matter of fact I have used the pause button icon last week and it worked. I may have to reinstalled the audacity program all together but that will be the last thing I do.
