output device settings

i’m using mac OS 10.9.5
Audacity 2.0.5
i used the .dmg installer
i’ve edited files with several versions of Audacity numerous times and after opening a large file (172.8 mb) which is almost 3 hours long, when i try to play the file i get the error message “error while opening sound device. please check the output device settings and the project sample rate”

i can’t find where the output device settings are or the project sample rate.

when i open the MP3 file in ITunes it plays quite well. the problem is that i recorded a radio broadcast of a concert i attended a week ago while i was at a play and i want to edit out the parts of the broadcast that are NOT part of the concert, but can’t do so unless i can hear it within audacity.

What kind of machine is it and do you have built-in speakers?

Set that in the device toolbar.

How did you record the radio broadcast? Some of the smaller Macs don’t have dedicated stereo play and record and have to juggle to make everything work.

it’s an Imac. i downloaded ocenaudio & was able to edit it down to 2 hours & that solved the problem. Audacity now opened it & i was able to finish editing with software i was more familiar with. thanks
