Orphans Abounding

For the first time in my 5+ years using Audacity regularly, I’m getting the following error with some frequency:

The only thing I’m doing differently is using an add-on called De-clicker.ny

I’m not noticing any actual problem with my sound files.

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

Is Audacity crashing? You will usually see orphan files if you recover a crashed project, and Audacity will normally clean those up automatically when you save the project.

Is Audacity showing a popup message about orphan block files or any other error when you open the project normally?

Have you saved other projects or had other projects open? I think you will have to leave the orphans there and not delete them. There is a very rare issue where Audacity moves the AU files to the wrong _data folder. The misplaced files are then missing files in one project and orphan files (that don’t belong there) in the other project.

No crashes, no other projects open. The error shows when I attempt to open a project from the ‘Recent…’ menu.

If you find some steps that makes it happen, please let us know. Note that if you copy AUP files and _data folders in Explorer while the project is open, this creates orphans in the copy, assuming it has unsaved changes.

It is only safe to paste the copies in another folder. If you paste (or rename) in the same folder you can destroy your project beyond repair.

It happened again with a new project!

But it doesn’t happen for us (usually). Do you remember the steps you took in that project? Was it a recording, or an imported WAV file? Did you do copy, paste or something else in that project? Did you close and reopen the project without closing Audacity?

Did you copy of Save As… that project?

What you could do is use Windows to search inside files for those file names mentioned as orphans in the log, just to be sure those names are not inside another AUP file. If they are, those files will be “missing” in that other project.

Just like the preceding case, it was an original mono voice recording. It was handled as I have handled hundreds of previous projects.

We can’t see your computer, so what handling steps are those, exactly?

Did something change just before the problem started? Did you start using a different drive? Did you change Audacity version? Have you installed new computer clean up applications?
