Only recording Room Noise [SOLVED]

Hi everyone -

I’m sure this is a complete novice question but I’m pretty technology ignorant so please excuse me. I’m on windows 8 and am using the latest version of Audacity, 2.1.1, which I just downloaded this morning.

I’m trying to record a tutorial podcast FROM THE INTERNET (I have permission). In other words I’m NOT speaking into a microphone. I’m just running the podcast and clicking the record button hoping to capture the audio coming off of the website.

However, all I’m getting is room noise - the television, people speaking, etc and NONE of what I want to actually record. I’m guessing all I have to do is turn something on or off, either via Audacity or my computer itself, but I have no idea what this would be.

Any help, please?

Audacity can choose the input to record from which needs to be set in Device Toolbar or Devices Preferences.

To record computer playback you have to choose stereo mix if your device supplies that, or change to Windows WASAPI host then choose the “loopback” recording device. Please see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html.

Thanks for your help Gale. It took me a few minutes to figure out what you were saying (like I said, a technological failure) but I finally made it happen.
