Nyquist returns value... but why???

Just in the past two days, whenever I try to apply Tremolo to a sound, I get a message saying “Nyquist returned a value of :”, followed by the frequency number I’ve tried to use for the Tremolo. The tremolo is NOT applied to the file. After repeated attempts, including restarting both Audacity and my computer (MacBook running 10.7.5), I searched for a solution. The only results I could find were how to intentionally apply a Nyquist value. Does anyone have a simple solution to help me get rid of this bug and back to where Audacity just works? Thanks to any who reply! :unamused:

Where is the Tremolo effect from? (can you post a link, or attach the .ny file to your reply)

Here’s the Tremolo that I’ve been using (successfully) for about six months. No problems until a few days ago. I can’t remember if it came with Audacity, or if it’s one of a bunch of Nyquist effects I added.

tremolo.ny (1.46 KB)

That looks OK, and it works here.

Do other Nyquist plug-ins work? (for example; High Pass Filter).

If you run the Tremolo effect clicking the “Debug” button instead of the “OK” button, a “debug” window will open. If there is any text in there, please copy and paste it into your reply.

I created a simple 440 sine wave, then tried to apply a Tremolo effect of 4. I clicked “Debug”, and got the same message: “Niquist returned a value of: 4.0000”. However, when I clicked “OK”, I got another message: “error: unbound function - GET-DURATION”. I have no idea what that means, or how to fix it. HELP!?!

Look in the Audacity “Help menu > About Audacity”.
What is the full version name/number of Audacity are you using?

I’m using Audacity 2.0.3 on a MacBook running OS 10.7.5.

Are you sure you don’t mean, when you click the “Debug” button?

Do other Nyquist plug-ins work? (for example; High Pass Filter).

Nope, Steve. When I clicked the “Debug” button, I got the value returned by Niquist. When I clicked the “OK” within that message, THEN I got the error message. Surprised me, too. Maybe it’s different in Windoze? I’ve gotten the same kind of Niquist message with a few other effects, but most seem to work. I’m not sure what inner glitch is happening. I suppose the next step is to completely uninstall Audacity and all its parts, then reinstall, but I sure wish there was another way.

OK, I think that makes sense.

You click the Debug button, and you first get a pop-up that says “Nyquist returned a value of : 4.0000”, then when you click the “OK” button you get a new pop-up (the “debug” window) with the message “error: unbound function - GET-DURATION”. Have I got that right?

It is still puzzling that you are getting that error. “GET-DURATION” is a function that is a standard part of Nyquist, so if that is “unbound” it means that part of Nyquist is missing (not installed).

I think that you will need to remove Audacity and re-install it. Ensure that you follow these installation instruction closely: Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS

Thanks, Steve, for confirming. I hate to have to do reinstalls – they always seem cumbersome and messy – but it may be the best fix. I appreciate the support (moral and otherwise!)

Well, a reinstall seems to have solved the Tremolo problem. I still have to load in the peripherals to allow me to save mp3’s, but Audacity is back to normal so far. Thanks for the assist!

Dave

You’re welcome.
Any idea how it went wrong in the first place?

Whatever it was, it wasn’t intentional… and it wasn’t the result of anything I’m aware of. I’ll keep an eye on what happens if/when I run any new programs which might have affected Audacity, but I suspect I’ll never catch the little green men.

Thanks for the help that was given to my previous Nyquist problem. Reinstalling seems to have fixed it. But now there’s a NEW one! I downloaded 2.0.4 the day it came out. I was excited about the “Buzz Tone” option under the “Generate” menu. However, every time I’ve tried it, I’ve gotten an error message saying “Nyquest did not return audio”. I don’t know what that means! I’ve tried several other “Generate” items, and even when all the defaults are left as they are, I still get the same message. Is there a way to reset or reinstall Nyquist? Thanks for any knowledgeable assistance!

Dave

Try running it again but press the “debug” button instead of the OK button.
After the plug-in has completed there will be another window open - this is the “debug window” that may contain information about what went wrong. Copy that information into your reply.

Thanks. What I got when I pressed Debug was “error: unbound function - MULT”. Does that help, doc? :-}

Dave

While we’re at at it, 2.0.4 won’t let me import audio into an existing track, which I WAS able to do in 2.0.3. (I couldn’t open a sound file, but I could create a new file in Audacity, put in empty tracks, then import a sound file.) The message below is what I got from the crash report when I tried to import a sound titled “MBuzz1min.wav” (no odd characters or spaces). I’m running OS 10.7.5 on a MacBook. I’d appreciate any feedback from knowledgeable diagnosticians, which I’m definitely not. Thanks!

This is similar to your original problem. “MULT” is a standard Nyquist function. If MULT is unbound then there’s something badly wrong with your Audacity installation because part of it is missing/not found.

This should not keep happening. Does your computer have other problems? How regularly does your computer crash? Can you check that the hard drive is OK? Can you check the computer RAM?

Sorry I can’t help with the crash report, I don’t use Macs.

Please see this thread: Audacity 2.0.4 still crashes

This is a known issue and we’re working on it.
