Nothing in the manual is what I see with the program open

I have Windows 10 on my laptop. I installed the software and retrieved the User Manual. I’ve read the User Manual twice and I simply cannot find what I need. Following the manual I double clicked the shortcut to Audacity and then clicked on Edit and scrolled down to choose Preferences. THAT is where it becomes a problem. According to the manual, the Preferences screen looks a particular way…mine looks nothing like it. It says to set recording device to USB Audio Device but there is no such option. That’s the very 1st step…what do I do when it isn’t the same? Lastly, how can I know what version of your software I have?

Help > About?

We’re expecting a three-digit number like 2.1.1.

Did you get it from here?

It says to set recording device to USB Audio Device but there is no such option.

If Windows can’t see your USB device, Audacity can’t see it either. Right-click the speaker icon and select Recording Devices to check if Windows sees whatever USB device you’ve got connected. The name of the device you see depends on the drivers and on how it identifies itself to Windows, so you may not see exactly what the manual says.

(I don’t have Win10, so I’m guessing you can right-click on the speaker icon to bring-up the audio control panel.)

Also, if your computer didn’t come with Win10 and you upgraded, make sure you have Win10 compatible audio drivers for your particular hardware.

Also, if you connected the USB device after you launched Audacity, do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar, so that Audacity can detect the newly added device.

You still can. The only difference is that if you left-click the speaker icon, the volume slider doesn’t now contain a link to the volume mixer where you can set volume levels for each app. The Volume Mixer is now a right-click option over the speaker icon.

Ok, took me a bit but I know my software version is version 47.1A. At least that’s what it says on the mini-disc. Is there some place else I can find that info? The software came with the unit.
How do I make sure I have Win10 compatible audio drivers for my particular hardware?
And, once I connect the device to my laptop, how do I do Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar, so that Audacity can detect the newly added device?

PLEASE forgive me my ignorance and me density in technological things?

I explained this in your previous topic. 47.1A will be the CD version number, nothing to do with the Audacity version number.

Check in Help > About Audacity… top right of the Audacity window. If it doesn’t say Audacity 2.1.1, get 2.1.1 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows.

I downloaded and installed 2.1.1 and it still looks nothing like the pics in the manual. So I’m still unable to use my device! PLEASE, help me?

Does this page help?

Here is the Audacity 2.1.1 manual. Or, simply open Audacity and click Help → Manual.

I downloaded and installed 2.1.1 and it still looks nothing like the pics in the manual

That’s not surprising if you are looking at the (probably outdated) printed manual that doesn’t match the (probably outdated) software supplied with your hardware.

How do I make sure I have Win10 compatible audio drivers for my particular hardware?

What is this USB device?

If Windows can’t see the device, you’ve probably got a driver problem. Or, you’ve got dead hardware, or a bad USB cable, or something…

Typically, USB audio devices are “plug-and- play” with the generic Microsoft-supplied drivers. If there’s no driver installation on the CD, that’s a clue that it’s designed to use Microsoft’s drivers. Otherwise, you’ll have to check the hardware manufacturer’s website.

Presumably the USB device is the “Cassette capture” device referred to in the user’s previous topic.

If you connected the cassette player after launching Audacity, look in the Audacity menu bar at the top of the screen and use Transport > Rescan Audio Devices.

Then click in the Recording device and choose the USB Audio CODEC for the cassette deck. It should say USB “something”.

Gale Andrews…did you look at the screenshot I attached? There is no such option! The option I’m to choose according to the manual and whatever you said are NOT options in the software I have.
Let me attach it again.

Have you tried clicking the Down arrows to the right of “Host”, “Playback > Device”, and “Recording > Device”? These 3 Down arrows open a menu of Options…

I hit all the different drop down boxes on the page that came up. See, as I said earlier…but not necessarily to you, and I am 100% serious, is that I am a complete illiterate when it comes to computers. I know how to turn mine on and off, do generic maintenance, surf the web, and play my games. Anything outside of that, the 1st through 4th (and last) time I tired being “techy” I killed my computer, crashed it good so I’m extremely scared and request instructions written so a smart 4 year old can follow them…I really just need to get this thing to function one time and I’ll get it, but I am fearful of doing anything unsanctioned. I cannot afford to crash this laptop…a friend was generous and bought it for me. If he hadn’t I’d be trying to be online with my Tower PC that ran Windows XP home.
Please forgive me! I’m really not trying to be an ass. I honestly have no clue.

As I asked you to do last time, look at the top of the Audacity window, take your computer mouse and click on “Transport”. In the menu that drops down, click on “Rescan Audio Devices”.

If Windows recognises your cassette device, then you should see the USB Recording Device for your cassette player when you click in Audacity’s list of recording devices.

If you are not sure what device to choose then click on “Help” top right of Audacity, then on “Audio Device Info…”. In the “Audio Device Info” window that appears, click “OK”. In the “Save Device Info” window that appears, click “Save”. Then attach the saved “deviceinfo.txt” file to your reply.

Generally, if you are not confident with computers, you can find computer technicians in the phone book who will come and help you, for a certain price. There is a limit to what we do to help you remotely.

I guess I’ll follow your directions and save up the next few months for the ability to pay Tech support. How foolish of me to think I could get help from a manufacrturer’s web site or their forum. Quite obviously it’s only for those who have tech savvy. Forgive me my foolishness.
I’d LOVE to see someone here live in a rental on $909.00/month AND afford Tech support.

I believe we have fallen over ourselves to help you. I spent time in my last post giving you the four year old’s steps you asked for.

We cannot see your computer, which is what I meant by the limitations of “remote support”. Do the Transport > Rescan Audio Devices then tell us the exact names of the recording devices you see (by clicking the list of recording devices). Or follow the steps to give us the Audio Device Info we asked for, which saves you having to click in the recording device list and type out the names.
