Normalize

I’m a newbie so I need advice -

I have a digital audio file copied from an old VHS tape.

The VHS tape was slowing down and speeding up thus affecting the pitch during the copying process. It’s sorta all over the place.

Does the normalize feature fix this?? If not, what can I do to fix the up and down pitch changes of the audio??

Thanks!

No. Normalize is an amplification effect. It amplifies the sound so that the loudest peak comes to the level that you set (default in Audacity 1.3.x is 0dB)

Not very much without an awful lot of manual tweaking. How important is this recording and how many weeks do you want to spend fixing it?

fast forwarding then rewinding the entire tape may help by evening out the tension in the tape.

If it is the VCR itself at fault then you could try one of those cleaners, or fitting a new drive belt.
