Hi, I have tried to install Audacity 2.0.5. exe.installer on Windows XP from Sourceforge and I have no Track Control Panel. I uninstalled twice re-installed three times but with no success. I downloaded the Microsoft Visual C++2008 in case this fixed the problem but unfortunately not.
Please uninstall whatever you installed and remove it from your downloads manager or from the downloads list in your web browser.
Then install this: http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-win-2.0.5.exe .
When you run the installer, make sure you put a tick (checkmark) in the “Reset Preferences” box.
When you launch Audacity and it asks if you want to reset preferences, click the “Yes” button.
If you still have the problem with the Track Control Panel after that, please attach a screenshot of what the problem is. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1 .
Please be careful with Windows XP. Microsoft are no longer officially supporting it, so it will be unpatched against any new security vulnerabilities that appear.
Make sure you have XP Service Pack 3. You can still download Service Pack 3 from Microsoft if necessary: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/en-gb .
The fact that you may have thought you were on http://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/ or http://audacityteam.org/ but may have downloaded a broken version of Audacity suggests you may already be infected. Ensure you have a good third-party anti-virus application, and run an overnight virus scan. Be aware though that this will not give you complete protection against a previously unknown attack.
For some extra protection you can install http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/jj653751 .
If it is not practicable for you to update to the much more secure Windows 7 or Windows 8, you can consider installing a Linux operating system instead. Most versions are free and all are very secure.
