No sound waveform when recording

When I click record, the Microphone and Playback indicators show something is being seen. But the waveform of the recording never shows and there’s not any sound when I try to play it back. I’m just trying to record from browsers.

I haven used Audacity in some time but I do have recordings from previous use. If I open one of those, the sound can be heard.

I’ve looked at many threads here regarding this problem and have changed the settings based on those. So I have the recording host set to MME and the device set to microphone. I have the four options at the top of Recording (like overdub) checked.

I’m using version 3.4.0 on a Windows 7 computer.

Would someone suggest what I should try, please?

You’re recording in 24-bit. Change that to either 16 bit or 32 bit, 24 is broken at the moment. 3.4.1 will fix it.

Thanks for the suggestion but it was set to 32 bit float already. I changed it to 16 bit but it still fails.

I tried installing the latest release but it fails too. I uninstalled it and installed an old version - same thing. When I play something just recorded, the playback meter shows levels so it seems like something is being recorded. Is there a record level setting? Is there a test option?
