no sound through Audacity on my Mac

I have recently purchased the USB AT-LP120 TT and installed Audacity.
I did have had the sound playing on my mac recently but it doesn’t work any more and nothing has changed. The Audacity folder is installed in Applications as instructed. The USB Audio codec Input Level is working but no sound is coming out of the computer. The Audacity software is therefore not recognising the records being played.
This is quite frustrating I suspect something must be wrong with the installation of Audacity.

Close Audacity.

Apple (upper left) > System Preferences > Hardware > Sound > Input. Do you see your USB device there? Select it and play a record. Do you see the bouncing ball sound meter jump?

Close the panel.

Launch Audacity.
Audacity > Preferences > Devices > Recording. Do you see your device there? Select it and also Stereo. [OK].

Play a record and Press Record. Do you get the bouncing red sound meter and blue waves? You may not be able to hear it yet.

Do you have us this far?

Koz

Thanks Koz,

I downloaded the LineIn and presto i have sound with the pass through on my MAC.

I can now get sound in Audacity as well but only when i press record. Is there any way I can play records through Audacity without having to press Record?

I was pretty sure i did that before but it won’t work now.

Audacity has Transport > Software Playthrough which does the same as LineIn (plays the audio from the turntable while you are recording). You should not have needed LineIn.

Yes, click in the red recording meter to start monitoring, as well as enabling Transport > Software Playthrough. If you had read Recording with USB turntables or USB cassette decks - Audacity Manual you would have discovered that  .

I am afraid that is not the case.
Without the Line-in records simply will not be heard through the computer. Software Play through has always been ticked on.

Which you did not say, so obviously we will suggest it.

We have Macs where software playthrough works (and lets you hear the record without recording if you also click in the recording meter). And you said you were getting playthrough recently - was that only using LineIn?

In Apple Audio MIDI Setup (input side), selecting the USB audio CODEC, you will probably find a disabled box called “Thru”. That’s hardware playthrough which hasn’t worked on OS X for years.

Without any information about the Mac you have or the version of Audacity you have it’s hard to comment further. If you don’t have the latest Audacity 2.0.5 yet, you can get it from here: Audacity ® | Download for Mac OS .
