No sound on playback

I’ve been trying to use Audacity 2.0.0 recently downloaded from the website. I’m trying to convert audio tapes to CD’s via a USB plugin to my Win-7 based pc. I seem to be able to record but can’t get the replay to my pc’s speakers. Evidence that it records is, that after the recording session, I can summon a spectrum of the frequencies recorded via Audacity’s “Help”. When I examine the Log after an attempt to replay I find the below messages. Any idea why I can’t make this product/software work? Thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer!

I changed your post to make it a little easier to read. I hope that’s OK.

When you plug something USB into a Windows machine, may times the machine will assume that you want to assign both speakers and microphone. You don’t. You might use the Audacity Device Drop-Down to select your speakers or Output Device and that problem will go away.

http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/device_toolbar.html

If all your computer sound vanished, you may need to do it in the Windows Control Panels.

It should also go away if you unplug your USB device. Windows should realize something is wrong and go back to its old settings.

Should.

Koz,

Unplugging the USB device before attempting to replay did the trick. Thank you very much.

when you say USB device, do you mean any kind of device, because the only USB device that i´m using is an external HDD so, i must disconnect this device too? because i have exactly the same problem (i´m using XP SP3 and audacity 2.0.1), and it crashes also when i try to amplify or normalize the entire recording
