no sound on Audacity

Windows 7
Audacity 2.1.1 (I think it was zip)

Sound works on everything else I try, but not Audacity. I have the same settings as always. I can record or import, it shows on the graphic. What could it be?

Do you have any external audio devices connected to your computer (in addition to your built-in soundcard)?

Have you selected the correct playback device?

“Do you have any external audio devices connected to your computer (in addition to your built-in soundcard)?”

No audio devices, unless my mic/preamp counts as one. I have detached it and there is still no sound. I use regular computer speakers.

“Have you selected the correct playback device?”

It is as usual, which is as it shows on the link you gave me, Realtek Digital Output.

Does no one have any ideas about my issue?

Audio and video files on my computer play sound, as does anything on internet. It’s just Audacity.

They may do. What are they? (make / model?)

Regarding audio devices:

Shure mic (the famous one, forgot model, bought about 3 yrs ago.

ART USB Dual Pre, Project Series (as above)

They are now detached from the computer.

When Audacity is launched, it looks at the computer’s sound system to see what audio devices are available. Audacity does not look again unless you explicitly tell it to (Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices). If audio devices are added or removed while Audacity is open, the actual audio devices in the sound system will be different to the devices that Audacity knows about - not good. So after changing any of the audio devices (including USB audio interfaces, USB mics, USB speakers, etc), it is essential that you either restart Audacity or rescan audio devices (restarting is generally the most reliable).

Select the device(s) to be used for recording and playback in the device toolbar.

I’m not having problems with audio devices. I have already relaunched Audacity, and I have all the settings as they should be, Realtek for playback. The problem is that I can get no playback audio. Audio plays from other players, from internet and my files, but not from Audacity. For clarity, I will copy the first 3 posts in this thread below:

Please try this:

 1. Reboot your computer
 2. Launch Audacity
 3. Open the Audacity Help menu and select “Audio Device Info…”
 4. Click the “Save” button and save it somewhere that you can find it.
 5. Attach the saved text file to your reply (see: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1)

Thank you. Here is the attachment. I will be off computer for a while, but look forward to your reply.

I’ve deleted your duplicate post (the first one did come through, as you can see).
I’ll also post the data from your file here so that we can refer to it more easily:

If you scroll down near the bottom, it shows:

Selected recording device: 1 - Stereo Mix (Realtek High Defini
Selected playback device: 4 - Realtek Digital Output (Realtek

and that is the problem.
Try setting the playback device to “Speakers (Realtek High Definiti” instead of “Realtek Digital Output (Realtek”

I had to take my computer in for other reasons and he got Audacity sound to work, too. It works now, don’t know why it wouldn’t before. Thanks for your efforts.
