no response with Windows 10

I’m using Windows 10, Audacity 2.0.5. When I was using Windows 7, I had no trouble recording with Audacity. (I record voice only.) Windows 10 crashed my old computer, I had to buy a new one, and now I get no response when I try to record. That is, the blue bar moves and shows slight variations, but no real oscillation, and I get no sound when I try to replay. What am I doing wrong?

What are you trying to record from, and how are you connected? Have you selected the correct Recording Device?

I’m recording my own voice, with the same headset I used before.

The current Audacity is 2.1.2 from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows. I suggest you use that version.

As Doug said, you have to choose the correct recording device in Audacity’s Device Toolbar. If it’s a USB headset and you connected it after Audacity was open, use Transport > Rescan Audio Devices in the Audacity menu bar at the top, then choose the USB Audio CODEC for the headset as both playback and recording device in Device Toolbar.
