no recordin

Windows Vista on one computer
Windows 7 on the other

When I try to record, on either computer, I have no sound and there is no wave form.
This is new. Previously I managed many recordings on both computers.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Audacity without success.
Please solve this mystery.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Audacity makes no difference to settings unless you enable the “Reset Preferences” box half way through installation. See: How do I reset my Audacity settings? .

If resetting preferences does not help, then I suggest you go the “Sound” control panel in Windows, show and enable all your devices, then restart Audacity and choose the device you want to record from in Device Toolbar .

Go to http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#vistacp to see how to show and enable devices in Windows Sound.

If after you do that there is still a problem, tell us exactly what you are trying to record. If you are trying to record computer playback, see Tutorial - Recording Computer Playback on Windows - Audacity Manual .

I have tried all your suggestions without success.
I cannot find “Select Additional Tasks” or the audacity.cfg file even though I have enabled viewing of hidden files.
So I have not been able to alter preferences as suggested.
Therefore I’m stuck!

Make sure you have downloaded the Audacity 2.0.5 installer from us:
http://audacityteam.org/download/windows .

Then run the installer. Here is the screen to “Select Additional Tasks”.

Perhaps you were using Audacity 1.2 or Audacity supplied by someone else. Please see the pink panel at the top of the page.
