No record from audio-cassette play via line-in port

I use a new HP Compaq 15 . h002sf computer on Windows 8 and Audacity 2.0.5. (via .exe installer) in order to record music from an analogic audio cassette recorder/player. I can only record something ambiant sound through the microphone of the computer but nothing from the wire connection.
I tried to change parameters on Edit -Preferences Menu and default devices on “Sound device” Parameters. Nothing better and sometimes worse which is nothing at all…!
On this computer, the line-in port (micro) and the line-out port (headphones) is the same.
Can someone help.
Many thanks in advance

On this computer, the line-in port (micro) and the line-out port (headphones) is the same.

Are you sure about that? Is there a utility to switch between headphone-out and line-in?

Most laptops only have mic in and headphone out. The headphone-out doubles as line-out.

Smart phones (and maybe some tablet computers) have a combination mono mic-in and stereo headphone-out that uses a special 4-terminal TRRS connector that’s a little longer than the standard headphone/microphone 3.5mm TRS connector.

If you don’t see line-in under “Recording devices”, you computer may not have line-in or it may not be configured as line-in.

If your computer doesn’t have line-in, the Behringer UCA202 is a popular and affordable solution. (Note that most “USB Soundcards” are like laptops with only mic-in and headphone-out.)

Yes, unfortunately I’m sure that there is only one jack-port for sound ! The vendor spec was tricky about that : it mentioned microphone/headphones port and not microphone and headphones ports. I clearly understood that when I got the machine in front of me !
I’m going to ask vendor if there is specific configuration to set-up line-in
And I will consider USB sound card as you suggest me.
Thanks to you

Many Windows laptops have only the Mic-In and Headphone Out because they’re intended to be business communications devices, not generic computers.

These are also the Skype connections.

Some very rare machines can switch one connection and even rarer actually have a blue stereo Line-In.
