no menu bar when I open application

I just installed audacity and follow the instructions. When I open it the menu bar is not visible. In other words, file, edit, view, etc, are not there.

I really need to get something recorded and exported tonight. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Normally the desktop menu bar says Apple-Finder-File-Edit…etc, right?

Did you actually install Audacity? Put the .dmg on your desktop, double click and explode it into the program folder and a readme file. Drag the program folder into /Applications.

That’s the kind of thing that happens when you try to run the program from inside the .dmg.

Any help?

I will admit that I am very new to Mac computers, but I believe I did everything right. I have actually uninstalled it and reinstalled it and tried to follow exactly your directions and still no menu bar.

You should probably make other arrangements until we figure this out.

Apple (upper left) > About This Mac
Read the version number.

More Info > Hardware.
Read the model name.

The machine is days old, right?

Are you sure that you are looking in the right place for the menu?
I don’t use Macs but I think they put the menu bar at the top of the screen rather than attached to the program window so if you’re used to working on a PC you may just be looking in the wrong place.

Yes.

It is possible Audacity could be covering up the menu bar. If you see the menu bar in other programs but not in Audacity, Audacity > Quit Audacity.

Open Finder, look for Go in the menu at the top, choose Go to Folder and type:

~/Library/Application Support/audacity/

In the window you come to, open audacity.cfg. Select all the text and delete it.

Then type the following at the top of the file:

NewPrefsInitialized=1

Save audacity.cfg and restart Audacity. This will start Audacity with factory-fresh settings.

On Macs, the desktop menu bar becomes the menu bar for the program in front. Illustration. Each program does not have its own bar like in Windows.

Koz, I really appreciate your efforts in solving this one. I was completely stumped! I created an account just to thank you. Thanks again. Flex
