No audio output [SOLVED]

I am running Audacity V2.1.0 under Windows 7. It was installed from the .exe installer.
I am sure that it is something simple but since installing V 2.1.0 I cannot get an audio output from a wav file opened in Audacity. I have the playback volume set at maximum and the output level meter shows a varying level as expected. The file plays satisfactorily through Windows Media player without changing any audio settings. What am I missing?

You can look in the Device Toolbar and see if Audacity is sending the sound to somewhere you can hear it. This can get scrambled particularly if you have a USB audio device.

Thanks Koz. I did not have the playback device set correctly.
