No audio or just distorded record on Audacity

Dear gents,

I have annoying problem. If I am trying to catch sound from internet radio stream I am getting no audio or just distorted record.

I have audacity 2.1.2 version on well-maintained windows 7. There is no HW defect on Lenovo laptop.

Interesting thing is I can not find Stereo mix device at sound card setting panel.

Lenovo got rid this feature from laptops T 4xx family.

Does anybody have idea how to move wiith this annoying issue?

Any advice is welcomed!

Use Windows WASAPI loopback as described in this Tutorial:

Yes Sir I did. WASAPI device is enabled but no sound recorded in MP3 file. Ridiculous!

Sir can U advise me how to record streams directly on Windows whilst I do not have Stereo MIx device? Streo mix device has been got rid on Thinkpad family 4xx.

You shouldn’t need to make an MP3 to find out there is no sound. You can use the Audacity sound meters and blue waves to make a good recording even if you can’t hear what it’s doing.

This is what a normal stereo recording looks like. You use the sound meters without making a recording by right-clicking on the recording sound meters > Start Monitoring. They will wake up and show you the sound—if you have any.

Modern computers no longer have Stereo Mix for recording sound foldback. That job has been taken over by WASAPI and this manual entry.

You should know Audacity checks for new devices and connections when it starts. So if you change configuration, either restart Audacity or Transport > Rescan.

Audacity does not record directly to MP3. It records in lossless PCM then you can export to MP3 if you add LAME ( ) to your computer.

The link I gave you already does that. Take your computer mouse and click on this blue text:

If you need it translated to steps that you can follow, perform these steps:

  1. In Audacity, open Device Toolbar.
  2. In the first (Host) box of Device Toolbar, choose “Windows WASAPI”.
  3. In the second (Recording Device) box, choose the (loopback) input for the device you are using for playback. For example, if you are using “Speakers” for listening to playback, choose “Speakers (loopback)” in this step.
  4. In the third (Recording Channels) box, choose mono or stereo.
  5. In the fourth (Playback Device) box, choose the Speakers or Headphones that you are using for listening.
  6. Start playing the audio you want to record.
  7. Press the big red Record button in Audacity.

Of course, we assume you have copyright holders’ permission to make these recordings.

Dear Gents!

Nobody has idea what is wrong with my distorted audio record on Audacity described in more details bellow??

As I remebered time ago my Lenovo Thinkpad T440 does not support stereo MIX audio device!!!

Does anybody have idea how to get rid this annoying issue?

Any alternative way how to grab audio from sound card or VLC player directly to M3 file anyhow?

My crappy internet radio has problem with RTSP streaming for VLC player running at Windows 7!!

Any advicu would be welcomed?

I am getting no audio or just distorted record.

Which one are you getting now, with WASAPI?

Are you hearing the streaming audio? Are you listening with your regular built-in soundcard or with something else (like USB headphones)?

Are the meters moving and are you getting the waveforms Koz showed you?

My crappy internet radio has problem with RTSP streaming for VLC player running at Windows 7!!

Of course, you’ll be recording whatever you’re receiving so if the streaming audio sounds bad the recording is going to sound bad too.

Have you actually tried these steps with WASAPI loopback recording ?

Answer that yes or no.
