Newbie question regarding formant filter

I’m on Mac OS 10.11.2 and Audacity 2.1.0.

Every now and then I need to transpose a musical recording, with vocals. Not surprisingly, the vocals sound funny afterwards. If transposed up, they sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks. I’ve gotten the impression that a formant plug-in (I guess it’s called a “filter” or “effect”) can compensate for this problem, make the vocals sound more or less normal in the new key.

If I’m right about formant, I need to find and install a formant filter. I’m willing to pay for that if necessary, but I’m not ready to spend a lot of money on a whole bundle of effects, because I will probably never use the others.

Suggestions for a plug-in that will suit my needs?

Chances are, the filter will have complicated settings and options. Where do I find out how to use it?

Thanks in advance.

Topic moved to Mac OS X board.

The only ones that I know of for Mac are Autotune 8 and Autotune 8 live. The Live version is about around $250 whereas the full version is about $400. I don’t think either of them work with Audacity but they should work in GarageBand (http://www.antarestech.com/products/detail.php?product=Auto-Tune_8_66#requirements)

There is an “alpha” release of a VST formant filter for OS X by Oli Larkin here.
