New user needs advice on the Device Toolbar

Hi, I’m sure I am just being a bit dull here, but I have just downloaded the latest Audacity on my Windows 8.1 pc and there are no options in the dropdowns in the Device Toolbar. Can someone advise me please

Windows can reserve or hide some of its devices and services. Close Audacity and take it up with the Windows Control Panels. This is where I duck in the corner. I’m a Mac elf.

You should also know that Audacity checks for devices when it starts. If you plugged in a USB microphone after Audacity is already running, it will be invisible. Also Transport > Rescan.

Have a look in the Windows Sound Control Panel and ensure that your computer has at least one device enabled for recording and for playback.
What sort of sound card / audio device do you have?
