I an new to this, just got a cassette recorder that plugs into my pc with a usb. First problem my recording sounded scratchy then when I played it back I find that what I said was recorded also. Here I go trying to learn something new. Hope ya’ll can help.

What? Are you saying you are getting the sounds in the room instead of the USB from the cassette player? You don’t want to record your voice?
In that case, make sure you [u]select[/u] the USB device instead of the microphone built-into your laptop.
Plug the Cassette Player in before you start Audacity. You can also restart Audacity to find the player or Transport > Rescan.
