New Laptop and Audacity

My old PC recently committed suicide and I have just gotten this new laptop. I have installed Audacity on the machine, but I cannot get the program to record sound from my laptop from the internal soundcard or speakers. Stranger still, I can record sound through my headphones even with the mic turned off.

How can I fix it so I can record sound from my internal soundcard through Audacity?

Choose WASAPI as the recording device if you want to record the output of your computer

One limitation of Audacity is that the selections in the Device Toolbar are sometimes trimmed off. If you drag the right-hand side of your Toolbar out, you can read the full line. Perhaps you are recording from the WASAPI loopback service for your headphones. Here are two different views of my Device Toolbar:

In fact, I think this is what you are trying to do.

Hmm, I have selected each of the options in the second column and none of them seems to work. Audacity is convinced there is no data coming in, but I hear the sound coming from my laptop. It is as though they are somehow not connected.

What I have are the following (I can’t figure out how to do a screenshot in here for you to see):

  1. Audio host … I have selected Windows WASAPI

  2. Recording Device … I have selected Speaker (Realtek(R) Audio) (loopback)

My other three choices for Recording Device are:

Headphone (Realtek(R) Audio) (loopback)
Headset Microphone (Realtek(R) Audio)
Microphone Array (AMD Audio Device)

I have tried all four possibilities and none seem to connect to the sound from my computer.

Which choices have you got for Playback Device? Choose the same Playback Device as the Recording Device.

I am confused. Earlier you said,

Note also that when recording with WASAPI, you may have to start the stream playing before you can record - it is a WASAPI thing.

I have the playback set to go through my headphones. Otherwise, even with headphones plugged in, the sound comes through my speakers and not the headphone.

I think I may just uninstall the program and reinstall it.

Uninstalling and reinstalling did the trick.

Glad to hear you are now working OK.
