New Envelope tool glitch

A new glitch is happening to my software and I do not know why it is happening. I use this tool to usually fade out something within the track, but now when I try to use the tool the four dots glitch to the beginning of this track. Images down below show this exact issue. I got a new update for my pc and it kinda stinks because when I have not played audio through the software, and then a few moments later I play the audio it takes like 5 seconds for it to be heard through the speakers, even though you can clearly see the audio being played. If this issue can be fixed should I download a new version of Audacity? Also will I lose my projects if I do get the new version??
Thanks and I will greatly appreciate help!

This forum board is for feedback and bug reports for Audacity 2.3.3 alpha. Is that the version you are using? (look in “Help menu > About Audacity”)

Nope… so should I download the new version or is there another way to do so?

Topic moved to Windows forum board.

The current release version of Audacity is 2.3.2. If you don’t have this version then it is recommended to update. The current release version of Audacity is always available via the Audacity website: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/

Do you mean that they are jumping from where you put them, to the beginning of the track?
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of an explanation. Try updating to 2.3.2 and see if that fixes it. If it doesn’t, then we can investigate further to try and find a solution.

Audacity 2.3.2 is backwardly compatible with other versions of Audacity. That is, old projects will open in newer versions of Audacity.

If your current version is very, very ancient (1.x.x series), then they will be converted automatically to 2.x.x format. This conversion is a one way conversion - it’s not possible to convert from the current 2.x.x format to 1.x.x format.

There are two issues that you raise here.

  1. The Envelope
I have just tested on my W10 laptop with both the released 2.3.2 and the latest test alpha test build I got yesterday for the upcoming 2.3.3

On both versions my envelope points behave as expected, remaining precisely where I place them - so your findings puzzle me

2. Delay in Playback
I too get this occasionally, but only on one of my W10 laptops (and not on my Macbook Pro).

The one afflicted sometimes (but not always) exhibits a two second delay before the sound starts. This did not use to happen, either with 2.3.2 or the earlier alphas I had for 2.3.3. My suspicious is that it is either a Windows update issue or more likely a driver issue for the soundcard. Both my laptops are set to auto-update Windows so Windows should be in step - but although both are HP laptops they have different soundcards and thus probably different driver software.

This suspicion is deepened by the fact that the afflicted machine also implement a “helpful” fade in over 2 seconds whenI record from the computer mic.

The version I have is 2.1.2 so it fully is not out of date. So when I download the new version of the software, the projects will be put into the new version, correct?

Audacity 2.1.2 already uses the new format, so there is no “conversion” necessary. The new format was introduced with Audacity 2.0.0.

Well that is good news for sure! Also the issue with the tool glitching is no longer happening. I greatly do appreciate the help. Thank you so much!
