I am using Windows 7 (latest updates) and Audacity 2.1.0.
In my previous installation using Windows 7 on the same computer with Audacity 2.1.0 I had everything working fine for a long time. Then I had a problem and had to do a fresh install of Windows 7 and downloaded Audacity (.exe) and cannot get the recording from the sound card to work. I am not using any microphone.
I am not using any microphone.
In other words, you’re recording YouTube sound?

Or recording your built-in microphone?

I am trying to record You Tube or Spotify or other sound over the internet.
If you reinstall Windows you may need to reinstall the sound device. Assuming you have a branded computer like Dell or Lenovo, go to their site and install the latest Windows 7 audio drivers for your computer model.
Then go to Windows Sound and enable the recording devices you want to use.
If you don’t have stereo mix or wave out you can use the Windows WASAPI (loopback) recording method. See the link Koz gave: Tutorial - Recording Computer Playback on Windows - Audacity Manual.
If you still have problems after following all the above, please describe what happens when you try to record. If you see an error, what does the error say? Or do you record just a flat line?

My drivers had not been updated although I was using 3rd party driver detect software. Went to Control Panel/Device Manager and it found/updated sound drivers. I set the input to Windows WASAPI and I am now getting recording. Many thanks, Gale, for your assistance. Have a Happy New Year.
