Nearly everything greyed out [SOLVED]

MacBook Pro 2009, OS X 10.10.5, Audacity 2.1.0

I downloaded a fresh copy of Audacity but found initially that I couldn’t change Devices from inbuilt Mike to the Combination Input from the Device Toolbar. I went to the Audacity Preferences but found they were greyed out.
Exploring further, I find that everything under the File menu except Open Recent & Import are greyed as are quit a few other possibilities on the menus, although they may be because a project hasn’t started yet.

Can’t find anything in FAQ or Forum search. Any suggestions?

Ensure that playback is “stopped” and not just “paused”. Click the “Stop” button.
