My new vocal recording (on a new track) always comes up muted (gray)

Using Audacity 3.7.1. When I record a vocal track (while listening to some other existing tracks), my newly-recorded vocal track is recorded fine, but shows up in gray color (muted) instead of blue color (not-muted). Once I finish my recording, I can click the “Mute” button on the newly0recorded track twice, and the track now turns blue (non-muted). Is there a way to get Audacity to record my vocal track without auto-muting it?

Guess Audacity automatically mutes new recordings during playback to prevent feedback or echo while monitoring.
You can try to disable software playthrough thrpough edit > preferences > recording.
Uncheck “software playthrough of input” (this prevents Audacity from monitoring your input during recording, which may help).
Also ensure “overdub: play other tracks while recording” is enabled if you need to hear existing tracks.

Thanks for the feedback! I don’t see “software playthrough of input” in recording options. I see:

“Hear other tracks while recording (overdub)” - checked
“Audible Input monitoring” (unchecked)
“record on a new track” - checked
“detect dropouts” - checked

It would be nice if “unmute new recordings when finished” was an option.

Oh, it’s called “audible input monitoring”

Yeah, "unmute new recordings when finished” would be useful
