Muted internal speakers play Timer Recordings [SOLVED]

When I put the headphones in to mute the speakers when I’m timer recording, the speakers mute, but the sound comes on when it starts recording. How can I stop this?.

Do you need to turn off Transport > Software Playthrough?

Thanks, I’ll try this next time I want to timer record something.

Software play through is turned off, but sound still comes through with headphones connected, when timer recording starts. I am using Windows 7, Audacity 2.0.3, having obtained the .exe installer.

The latest Audacity version is 2.0.5 - Audacity ® | Download for Windows .

Where is sound coming from when you record, and what exactly are you recording? Is the sound coming from the internal speakers?

Right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose “Recording Devices”. Right-click over the input you are recording from then choose “Properties”. Then click the “Listen” tab and ensure “Listen to this device” is unchecked (not ticked).

If sound is coming from the internal speakers when playing YouTube or some other audio you want to record, then you may need to open the Windows Control Panel and look in the control panel for your sound card. There may be a control that mutes the internal speakers when a headphone is plugged into audio out.

When I Timer-record with the headphones plugged in the sound comes from the internal speakers. I am trying to record internet streaming media. ‘Listen to this device’ was already unchecked in all the devices. I enclose some screen shots of what I get when I open the control panel and sounds and devices.

Workaround: try plugging in a dummy 3.5mm stereo jack with no cables attached or one that terminates in another plug of some sort.

My other method is to plug in my active speakers as they have their own volume control.

Is that going to help if plugging in headphones doesn’t kill the internal speakers?

You will have to click on Hardware and Sound in the Windows Control Panel and look for the type of setting I indicated.

This is either a setting, or perhaps your sound device does not have proper drivers (see Missing features - Audacity Support ) .

Do you have separate Speakers and Headphones playback devices? If so, try disabling the Speakers in Windows “Sound” (right-click over the speaker icon by the system clock, then choose “Playback Devices”).

Do I assume you are recording with stereo mix or what U hear? If so, try recording with Windows WASAPI (loopback).

  1. Open Device Toolbar .
  2. In the first (Host) box of Device Toolbar, choose “Windows WASAPI”.
  3. In the second (Output device) box in Device Toolbar, choose the Speakers or Headphones that you are using for listening.
  4. In the third (Input device) box in Device Toolbar, choose the (loopback) input for the same device you chose in step 3. For example, if you chose “Speakers” in Step 3, choose “Speakers (loopback)” in this step.
  5. In the fourth (Input Channels) box in Device Toolbar, choose mono or stereo.
  6. Start playing the audio you want to record.
  7. Press the Record button in Audacity.
  8. Left-click the speaker icon by the system clock, and left-click the “Mixer” link.
  9. Turn down or mute the “Device” volume slider. Audacity should still record the sound at a fixed level.

Tnanks I’ll try this when I have time.

I take the “mute” to mean that plugging in the headphones cuts out the speakers (that’s the point of the headphone socket) - and I took to mean “the sound comes on when it starts recording” that the sound comes on through the headphones.

That’s exactly what happens on both my W7 and my XP machines - so I think my advice stands.

I put the Headphones in to mute the speakers when I’m recording something online, and no sound comes out of the speakers during recording, but if I Timer record, I plug the headphones in to mute the speakers, but sound comes out of the speakers when recording starts. How can I stop this?.

Of course your advice stands if the sound when recording comes through the headphones, but in

You’ve asked that question before. Rather than ask again, please try the suggestions I made here: Muted internal speakers play Timer Recordings [SOLVED] - #9 by Gale_Andrews .

If you record with Windows WASAPI and mute the Device slider in Volume Mixer you will not hear anything, unless your sound device is completely broken.

I’ve tried your suggestion and it worked, and was very helpful. Thanks very much for you help.
