Must project sample rate be same as default sample rate?

In Audacity, I get no sound when playing any of my .aup3 project files, even with activity in the VU meter. But there is no activity in Windows’ Sound utility VU meter (Advanced tab). When I play an audio file with my regular media player, all is well: there is activity in Windows VU meter.

This problem occurred yesterday, which I resolved by setting the project and default sampling rate to 48000Hz, in both Audacity and Windows Sound utility. In the latter, I also unchecked “Allow apps to take exclusive control.” I also closed Audacity → unplugged my headphones → restarted Audacity → plugged in the headphones and rescanned audio devices.

Today, the problem resurfaced. If I change the Playback Device to my laptop’s internal speakers, I get sound–but not if Headphones or Primary Sound Driver are selected. Must the default sample rate be same as that in a project?

Never mind. I think I found the problem: I recall recently updating to version 3.7.8, after which the playback sound problem surfaced. I uninstalled the app, removed its footprints from the registry then re-installed version 3.7.6. The problem is gone. So I figure version 3.7.8 is unstable…at least on my system.
