I’ve written before that my files don’t seem to end up in the folders. here is more info.
I’m using windows 11, and audacity3.7.3 .
when I go to save a project I’ii use " save project as…
I then designate my desktop. new folder , name both folder and project and save. It use to come out as an aup file that I could retrieve but now what happens is the file appears on my desk top but when I try to access it from the file tab ,either open or import the file is blank. however if i try opening it up from the desk top icon the content is there ? any ideas as it is very frustrating. thank you.
Please only open one single discussion per problem. Thank you.
If you save a project, you’ll get a single file with an extension “.aup3”. This file contains everything. In earlier versions of Audacity (v 2.x), it was a file with extension “.aup” and a corresponding, separate folder which was similarly named. You needed both in the same directory to work woth the project.
Look for a file with .aup3 at the end, you/your computer might have saved it elsewhere, not on the desktop.
File > Import is for audio data, such as a .wav file, not .aup or .aup3 files. Open project files using File > Open or by double-clicking on the file. If File > Open doesn’t work for you, then you might be trying to open the outer folder instead of the file. Enclosing the file in a folder is unnecessary, since .aup3 files have everything in a single file. For more information, see Managing Audacity Projects - Audacity Manual
Sorry about the dbl post. I’m not very good with forum decorum and wasn’t sure how to add a comment. I see the point , and thank you. I will try your suggestions , and they are much appreciated.
Thank you.

the instructions say to save project ( automatically saves as an aup ) so I click save . when I go to open it I click open but it takes me to a blank space , Never did that before, What changed ?
If you’ve found the saved aup3 file using Windows, and it opens correctly when you double-click on it, then the file was created correctly. Somehow you’re not finding it when you try to open it inside Audacity. Since you saved it to the Desktop, your steps to open it would be:
- Inside Audacity, click File > Open.
- In the small window that opens, click Desktop on the left.
- Do NOT select the Desktop item that might appear in the right pane. Scroll down until you see the folder that you created on the desktop. Double-click on it.
- You should now see the aup3 file that you created when you did the Save As. Double-click on it, and Audacity should open it correctly. If you don’t see the aup3 file, make a screenshot or take a picture of what you do see and post it in this discussion.
You don’t say what changed between “before” that you’re used to and “now” that you’re having trouble with. Did you upgrade Windows from 10 to 11? Did you upgrade Audacity from 2.x to 3.7.3? Did you install Audacity on a new computer? All of these will affect locating project files from inside Audacity.
You can pre-define the place where Audacity should save (or from where it should open) your work in the preferences dialog:
Of course, you can always manually override these settings.
Before refers to the other day when I didn’t have this problem. As far as I know I changed nothing, hence the frustration. I will take a look at your suggestions and see if s screen shot will help hire it out . Thank you
Will check it out. Thanks
It must be very frustrating. Hmm, I thought surely this change was triggered by a major change of some kind. Though looking at the calendar, Patch Tuesday was last week, so chances are your system recently installed some updates. This does look like more of a Windows problem than Audacity, but it affects Audacity.
I personally don’t use File > Open, but open saved projects by finding them with Windows and double-clicking on them. To me that’s the easiest method. But if you’d rather use File > Open, I’d like to help you do that. Please try the steps I listed earlier and see if they work for you.
