I recently purchased a brand new Macbook pro running OS X and a Behringer USB mixer to record my podcast on to Audacity. Yet, I cna’t seem to get Audacity to recognize the mixer. The Mac shows it is connected, I went into the Sound options in Mac settings and selected the USB CODEC. And all the boards I’ve read have said select “Preferences” on Audacity and Audio I/O option, but this doens’t exist in my preferences. I’m new to Mac, so detailed help would be great. Thank you!
That refers to the long obsolete 1.2.x versions of Audacity.
Please refer to the current manual: Audacity Manual

Yes, you should probably be using Audacity 2.0.5. You can get into serious troubles with the older versions.
Just so we’re talking about the same process here, you clicked on the apple in the upper left corner of your desktop > System Preferences > Sound > Input. You selected your USB mixer and the little blue ball sound meter jumped when you made sound, right?
Once you get it that far, it’s just getting the right Audacity and setting it to look at the mixer.
