Mic keeps fading with audio

Hey guys,

So I recently bought a new microphone to do some voice recordings. I downloaded and installed Audacity on my laptop but noticed something odd happening with each recording. After the first second the audio immediately dies out and sounds incredibly muffled. I thought it might be my speakers, but even the saved files have this issue. I was worried it was my microphone, but after doing a fresh install and plugging in my mic to my PC, I don’t seem to have this issue.

I’ve followed numerous Youtube videos and tried to reinstall the program (I have limited knowledge with PC’s so I figured I had installed it incorrectly) but the problem seems to still persist.

The specs:
Mic - CAD usb u37
Laptop - MSi GS70 2QE Stealth
PC - Old, old, old various parts.

I would not look at YouTube videos about Audacity. None of them are authored by us, some of them are inaccurate and most are for outdated versions of Audacity that don’t match up with the current release.

Please state your Audacity version and version of Windows - see the pink panel at the top of the page.

If you record with Windows Sound Recorder (with the mic as default Windows recording device) then you can find out whether or not it is an Audacity problem - it probably isn’t.

Have you tried checking that any sound effects or enhancements are turned off for this mic? See http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_recording_troubleshooting.html#enhancements .

Have you tried another USB port?

Are you recording at the same time as computer audio is playing, that is doing overdubs?
