I just bought a studio mic hoping to record vocals in audacity with my pc.
I’m using a 1/4" plug to 3.5 mm converter to plug the mic into the computer soundcard.
Is this a good way to record vocals? Cause i’m not really getting a good signal and the vocals sound really dull. Do i need a preamp?

That’s what’s supposed to happen. You left out a lot of steps and information, but that’s basically it. The microphone (depending on which one, etc) provides a tiny signal to the Mic-In of the sound card (pink on a deskside PC) and the sound card boosts it up so you can use it in a musical mix.
There are hundreds of things that can go wrong with a simple system like that. Do you have echoes in your room? The sound card can be noisy or have distortion.
You probably need to go into Windows Control Panels land make sure the audio conferencing service is turned off. That will seriously mess with a live performance.
