Mic is not picking up sound please help trblshoot

I am simply using the mic on my laptop. I was recording audio fine earlier. I must have done something because now my mic isn’t picking up any audio, here is the weird and annoying thing… If I have something playing on my computer, like a song on iTunes or watching a YouTube video, the mic will just pick up that, but if I stop all sound from my computer and try and record my voice and/or instrument I get nothing. Please help me troubleshoot this. It’s very annoying

Which version of Audacity and which version of Windows?

Look in either the “Sounds” section of the Windows Control Panel, or in the sound card control panel and look for the recording settings. Set the recording input to “Mic”. It is may currently be set for “Stereo Mix” or “What U Hear”, but you need it set to the internal microphone.
