Method required for establishing "real" time

I have some long field recordings, and I’d like to be able to easily tell what time of day it was at any particular point on the tracks. I know what time each one started, so I can mentally add that to the reading on the time scale, but it’s slow and annoying.

Is there a way to adjust the origin of the time scale? I.e. if the recording started at 5.36am then the time scale would start at 5h 36m instead of 0:00. I worked out I can use the time shift tool to move the recording around, but I don’t know how practical it is to have a 5 hour gap at the start.

Alternatively, I could enter labels every 5 minutes or so. Is there a way to auto generate them?

Any other ideas?

No.

I’d imagine it would be a bit peculiar working in that fashion, but I think you could do that.

Yes there is. In the Analyze menu - “Regular Interval Labels”. http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Analyze_Menu#interval_labels

I don’t think I’ll even try, I think it would be a nuisance. Fit Project would be useless for a start.

Excellent, thanks very much for that, although it’s not quite what I want. There’s no way to get it to do hh:mm, but at least I can put in the colon and the minutes so I can reduce the amount of typing I’ll do, and having them automatically placed will save heaps of time.

On the other hand, I just found that plugin’s code at C:Program FilesAudacityPlug-Insequalabel.ny and it’s in plain text -I didn’t know these plugins weren’t precompiled. I might be able to make my own plugin to do exactly what I want without too much effort.

Yes, plain text
It’s a “Nyquist” plug-in.
Nyquist is a programming language for audio and music that has been embedded into Audacity. It’s pretty well documented - a good starting page is here: Missing features - Audacity Support
We also have a section on the forum specifically for Nyquist, so if you need any help you are welcome to ask here: Nyquist - Audacity Forum
