Many of the iTunes tools and converters stop working if you have downloaded protected songs. There is an under-the-table way around that by making a playlist, put the song in it and then burn the playlist to an Audio CD. Then rip the CD back into iTunes and iTunes will volunteer to convert the import to anything you want that QuickTime can handle – including MP3.
And yes, my test sound clips work just fine.
