Mac Problems With USB Input from Turntable

I have a MacBook Air M2. I also have an old MacBook Air from 2017. On the old one I can get it to connect via USB to my turntable and use an older version of audacity on that. Works fine. On the M2 I can’t. I have fiddled with input/output settings and just get errors about 9986 internal port error. Anyone know how to fix this? It never recognises the connection or input?

Allow access to the “microphone” for Audacity in system settings.
