Low recording signal

I like to record audio from a MS Surface Pro3 computer in a docking unit. But the input signal is very low even with maximum recording volume and playback is noisy. I have tried different settings (MME, MS Sound mapper and all possible combinations), no luck. I tried to turned the loudspeakers off, no difference. Any hints? Thanks in advance!

Recording to or recording from???

What’s your source? Streaming audio? A microphone? Something else?

If you are recording from hardware (a microphone or turntable, etc.), how are you connected?

I should have mentioned that. Source of recording is computer / streaming.

Perhaps you are choosing the wrong recording device in Audacity. See Tutorial - Recording Computer Playback on Windows - Audacity Manual.

WASAPI - I never tried it since it appears NOT to be for win 10, tutorial says: “This host only appears on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, it is the most recent Windows interface, that Audacity supports, between applications (such as Audacity) and the soundcard driver.” (Maybe this text is not up to date?)

Well, anyway recording now works fine!

Yes WASAPI is for Windows 10 too. The explanation of the text not being up do date is that the current Audacity 2.1.2 does not fully support Windows 10. If some of your audio devices do not have proper Windows 10 drivers, Audacity does not detect any audio devices and you can’t play or record.

That problem has been fixed in our source code so the Manual will be updated for the next 2.1.3 release.
