First off I am running windows 7 on an acer laptop and audacity 2.02 with an ART M-one usb microphone
I have been trying to record guitar with this set up but the recording level doesnt get above -24 db when the mic is about a foot away from the guitar. I have used normalize set at -1 db which increases the input/output levels but that ends up clipping some of the wave. there is no microphone boost with this microphone in the windows setup but there is for the onboard mic of the computer. any ideas to get a higher input? P.S the recording volume is set to maximum.
thanks
What sort of mic (make and model number) and how is it connected to the computer?
Have you tested the microphone with other hardware?
Its a ART M one usb condenser microphone. Conected via usb. I have done voice recording but I have to hold it about an inch from my face to show any real input level. The level from about a foot away is at about -24 Db. I have a feeling it maybe a sound card issue. All other sounds are normal. I use it to play music podcasts and they sound fine.
Two things to check:
-
Ensure that the Recording Input is set to the USB option in the Device Toolbar http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Device_Toolbar
-
Check that the USB mic is enabled in the Windows Sounds Control Panel and that the recording level is turned up: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#vistacp
Hello thanks for your help. I checked all of the above and everything checked out as stated in the links i followed. It still records and plays back at about -24 db. I have to get to within an inch to get it higher. I noticed with the onboard microphone built into the laptop that there is a mic boost button in levels but not for the usb mic. the mics specs are as follows:
CARTIOID USB MIC
USB 2.0/ 24 BIT /48KHZ AtoD CONVERSION
ONE THING I JUST NOTICED IS THE MIC SAYS 24 BIT 48 KHZ
BUT IN THE PROPERTIES IN WINDOWS IT SAYS 16 BIT 48 KHZ BUT WONT GIVE ME THE OPTION TO CHANGE THE BIT
THANKS AGAIN
