I used to be able to record any radio or podcast I was listening to … or movie …
suddenly I try to do that and get a terrible noise… the blue audio signal fills the
panel … its a total mess !

Do you mean Audacity 2.0.6?
That’s quite an old version now. the current version is 2.1.2 which is available here: http://www.audacity.audio/download/windows/
You may have turned on “Software Playthrough” by accident. Turn it off in the “Transport” menu.
HIT the transport … the sofware playthrough was ticked
unticked it … bingo… I can record audio live on line again
