Lost project file

Secretary was transcribing minutes of meeting and when taking a break closed Audacity version 2.0.3 on a windows 7 machine. She then told it to save the file but now I only have a data file and no project file. Can this be recovered or rebuilt?

There is no data file. There is an AUP file and _data folder.

Open the AUP file from File > Recent Files in the Audacity menus.

You don’t want to be reconstructing without the AUP file.

I am not sure what she has done but I do have a **** Minutes data folder. Inside that folder is another named e00, inside that folder is another named d00 and inside that are files. They start with e00000b1, e00000c6, etc.

As previously stated, ask her to use File > Recent Files.

If the AUP file is not listed there, have her search her computer for it.

A folder called “**** Minutes_data” would be impossible on Windows. “*” is not valid in a file or folder name.

When trying to open from recent the aup file does show but when it is selected a dialog box pops up stating there is 3352 orphan blocks but they will do no harm. Then we clicked continue without deleting and nothing opens and there is no error message.

This sounds (perhaps) as if the audio may be too long for the project rate.

You could try opening the project in 2.0.6-alpha (get the build from the top of http://gaclrecords.org.uk/win-nightly/ ).

This issue (if it’s the cause) is explained here:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/File_Management_Tips#big_project .

If the project does not open correctly in 2.0.6-alpha, please attach (1) the AUP file and (2) the log file from Help > Show Log… (top right of the Audacity menus).

Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1 .
