Lost all playback sound??

Hi, be gentle I’m a complete newbie.

I’m using Vista. I’ve been ‘messing about’ with Audacity for a few years but suddenly I am getting no sound when playing back my recordings.

I can see the waveform being generated but hear nothing when I try to listen, I’ve followed all the advice on FAQ’s and uninstalled and downloaded the latest version.

Anyone have ideas?

Mike.

Have you plugged in a USB audio device?
If so, see here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ:Playback#usb

As I said I did read the FAQ piece about USB devices and followed the advice given but still no sound.

Not wanting to be picky, but you didn’t say that. You didn’t mention that you were using a USB device.

I assume from your reply that you are do have a USB audio device plugged in. Is that correct?
If so, what sort of USB device is it?
Is audio restored if you shut down the computer, remove the USB audio device and restart the computer?

No I am not using a USB device. Audio is not restored if I restart the computer. Or even if I uninstall and then reinstall AUDACITY.

Do you have any sound in other programs, or is all the audio dead?

Are you using external computer speakers, headphones or built-in speakers?

Right-click the speaker icon by the system clock > Open Volume Mixer. Make sure the Audacity volume slider in Volume Mixer is turned up. Make sure the output volume slider is turned up in Audacity too:

Have you tried resetting Preferences http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/preferences.html#stored ?
