I record long radio events and at around 6h45m47.835 the sound begins to distort - like a gargling sound, not conventional clipping distortion.
But if I make two recodings of 6h each and copy them to one 12h file, the result is perfect!
Audacity 2.1.2, but also happens on older versions.
I tried on Windows 10, 8.1 and 7
Audacity is a 32 bit program. I seem to remember this is the limit it can address, depending on number of channels, bit depth and sample rate. Perhaps you could try lowering on of these factors?
I’m sure one of the people who know will chime in.
EDIT: according to the FAQ, I’m wrong:
http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_recording_how_to_s.html#remaining
Audacity is only limited by disk space. Do you have enough free disk space?

That would be the 32-bit limit for track storage at 88200 Hz but as Cyrano says, that limit no longer applies to current Audacity.
Is your project rate 88200 Hz (bottom left)?
Is it a physical radio or internet radio?
Can you post a WAV file of a few seconds at the transition where the gargling starts? And please attach the saved file from Help > Audio Device Info… (click OK).
Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1

My project rate is 44100.
Yes, it is internet radio, recording direct from the audio driver.
But the gargling is only heard on the recording, not during listening. And it happens on all 3 of my PCs.
Here is the transision, in the attached file.
/uploads/default/original/2X/d/d400c36c8879c05fed1fd80509f2758df947335d.wav
Sorry, that was a .wav file.
I think the project file will be more useful to you.
I have saved the extract and zipped it up. Here it is.
gargle.zip (968 KB)
And here, finally, the Audio Device Info.
I just realized I have 2.1.1, not 2.1.2

You could try 2.1.2 - http://audacityteam.org/download/windows . It has a new version of the PortAudio Audio I/O library we use.
You could also try recording in Audacity with Windows WASAPI loopback instead of stereo mix.
As an experiment you could see if Windows Sound Recorder has the same problem. You already have Stereo Mix as default Windows recording device, so Sound Recorder would record from Stereo Mix automatically.
