While recording my podcast last night, the local disk (C) on my computer filled up, which seems to have caused some kind of recording error. I was unable to save the Audacity file, but I was able to export the file as an mp3. The recorded mp3 file is fine up to a certain point, then is mostly silent for the rest of the show with a few skip sounds here and there.
Looking at the recording on Audacity, I see some audio for this part, but nothing plays with the exported mp3 file. Does anyone know a way to somehow save this Audacity file and retrieve the audio that took place while my local disk (C) was full. It was an important show, so I’d hate to have lost the last half of the show. By the way, the local disk is no longer full.
Thanks,
Dave

When that happens, you don’t have a computer any more. You have a damaged data system struggling to breathe. It will no longer do predictable computer tasks—such as saving your work. I’m surprised Audacity didn’t crash or freeze.
You can get the scramble you got if not only did it run out of room, it also had highly fragmented drive—tons of tiny places to put things, not one big, smooth storage area.
Now that your system is back up, to a clean shutdown (Shift-Shutdown), wait a bit and then Start. Then check drive continuity and health. It’s supposed to do this by itself, but again, you don’t have a normal machine now.

Thanks, Koz. Do you think there is any way to retrieve a decent recording of this podcast?

Not unless you double recorded it. The instant the machine ran out of room, it stopped reliably recording the show. There’s nothing to retrieve.
This is from a remote radio broadcast I shot. It’s only a single voice in Los Angeles, but the reason it looks crazy complicated is I double recorded it. The right-hand system is the client’s sound recorder. The left-hand system is Audacity connected to a small sound mixer and my microphone.
