Is it possible to record vocals from live recordings? I’ve tried unsuccessfully and now realize that maybe it cannot be done.

What? Do you mean remove vocals?
I’m trying to remove the vocals to create an instrumental or karaoke track.
I assume you tried the Vocal Removal plug-in?
Vocal removal works by subtracting left from right which removes everything in the “center”. It won’t work with a mono recording and it probably won’t work with a stereo recording made with 2-microphones because the center isn’t well defined.
If you have a professional multitrack live recording of the Rolling Stones (or something like that) where the vocal mics were close to the singer and panned-center, it should work just as well as studio version.
Vocal removal can work “perfectly” if the vocals are perfectly centered but you rarely get good results because it removes everything in the center (although you can leave the bass).
