Latency when recording to a backing track

Hello,

I imported an mp3 backing track into Audacity and am using an external microphone plugged into my computers 3.5mm jack as an input to record over the backing track. I am listening to both the backing track and the microphone input thru my headphones. There is a significant latency between the live Sound going into the microphone and what I hear in the headphones…is there a way to fix this in Audacity? Or another work around?

Thank you,

Mike

That’s machine latency. The time it takes for your voice to go round trip through the machine. Without adding hardware, I think the only way out is stop listening to yourself.

Turn off playthrough.

You can get a sense of what you’re going to sound like by singing into your hand. Gary Owens is spoofing a real thing (attached, below). Announcers used to actually do that before mixer amplified studio fold-back.

Note in this picture, the headphones are connected to the microphone, not the computer.
