Lame Encoding Problems

New guy here (to the forum and Audacity). I have downloaded and installed “FFmpeg for Audacity”. When I try to export a project as an MP3 file I point to the (default) encoder folder where the encoder is installed (C://Program Files (x86)/FFmpeg For Audacity/lame_enc.dll) but I get a “Could Not Open MP3 encoder” error. And I do not see lame_enc.dll in that folder, although there are a number of obviously FFmpeg files there such as the README and the ffmpeg application file (which I have run, but I am not sure if it did anything).

What am I missing here? Do I need to restart my computer before this will work? I have restarted Audacity a number of times.

Thanks.

To install LAME, have a look here:

http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#Windows

Thanks - I am running Audacity 2.1.2 on Windows 10, BTQ.

I used the LAME version saying “compatible with Audacity 2.0.6 and later” instead of the first one listed which had no such description. Installing V3.99.3 solved my problem.

Thanks.

LAME and FFmpeg (which you installed first time) are different libraries.

LAME is only for encoding MP3.

FFmpeg can import (decode) and export (encode) many other formats, like WMA, AC3 and AAC. You can use FFmpeg to export MP3 too, but not by selecting LAME in Libraries Preferences.

Gale - thanks so much for the clarification.
