Just purchased cassette to mp3 player

I tried to follow the instructions, but when I went to transfer a cassette to my mac (10.4.1), I couldn’t hear anything except on the headphones.
And then when I played back, I just heard feedback and myself walking around the room and cursing. How do I get this thing up and working?
